Acid Reflux is horrible

Poor baby has horrible acid reflux. After the diaper rash I just wish he could feel "normal."

I've read conflicting opinions on whether or not my diet has anything to do with his tummy troubles. I know the cause of his problems is because he's not yet fully developed but I'm hoping that I can help him until he gets there.

My mom is going to support me and tomorrow we're going on the Dr. Sears Elimination Diet for two weeks. http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/feeding-infants-toddlers/food-allergies/elimination-diet
  • Eat only range-fed turkey and lamb, baked or boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes (with salt and pepper only), rice and millet as your only grain, cooked green and yellow squash for your vegetable, and for fruit, pears and diluted pear juice. Drink a rice-based beverage drink in place of milk on cereal or in cooking. Do not yet use soy beverage. Take a calcium supplement. (Rice products, such as rice beverage, rice-based frozen dessert, rice pasta, rice flour, and millet are available in nutrition stores.)
I'm generally against this as I thought he should have things in his system to get used to them. But he is in such horrible pain that I can't stand it any longer.

Wish us luck as this diet looks pretty miserable, but again it's nothing little Colton is going through before, during and after every meal :(

Two month check-up

We are so fortunate to have a beautiful baby boy. He has many of the common preemie problems, but nothing that he won't outgrow (or mature out of). Dr. Cafaro is very happy with his physical growth, so we are too.

Mentally he's still trying to catch up. He's following our voices. He also can follow things with his eyes. He's very strong and where he needs to be with tummy time. He's still not sure his hands are his own. Dr. Cafaro asked if we were still swaddling him - and we laughed. Colton is not a fan of the swaddle, but it does help when he's beside himself.

Colton is now 21 3/4" long and 9 lbs. 14 oz. Apparently this is really great since he was diagnosed with acid reflux and prescribed a generic version of  zantac. This is when I hate being a first time mom. I never know what's normal. All of the readings state that 6 - 8 weeks is when babies will be the fussiest and cry the most. Since Colton doesn't have the traditional signs of colic, we thought he was just "fussy."  We knew he didn't like lying down to sleep (he has us trained to take shifts where he can sleep on his belly on our chests - yes he has a full-time crew). And his throw-up has been increasing (but not projectile vomiting).

We thought he was super fussy b/c of the diaper rash, but that has been healed for the better part of a week (thank goodness). I feel awful that I didn't take him in earlier to deal with his tummy acid.

The other issue he has is something that is just because he's a preemie - he has an umbilical hernia. This is common in preemies (2/10).  It doesn't cause him harm, but it looks painful. We just have to watch that it doesn't turn color or develop down below. It should go away on it's own by the time he's 2.

Lastly his cheeks are dry. I'm sure it's from the milk that's always being regurgitated. Luckily aquifer is the perfect solution. Two applications and his chipmunk cheeks are soft again.

Who knows, now that the tummy is feeling better, maybe he can sleep in his crib soon.
