Thank goodness for my $525 shovel

Some of you may remember when I bought my new shovel from Brady Street Hardware.  It's all coming back to me now...

Todays snow is the dry, light stuff that seems to fall endlessly (Maybe that's because it hasn't stopped all day and is still snowing!).

This reminds me of the day I purchased my shovel when I moved to the South Side of Brady in 2004. It was snowing just like it is now.  I didn't so much realize that there was a metal stip at the end of the shovel.  The poor little Kia was to be the victim from a lazy, soft snow attempt at clearing more quickly than with a snow brush/scraper alone.  You see, the snow kept gliding over my arm when attempting to clear it from the Kia's roof.  So, in a last ditch effort I took the shovel, flipped in upside down to cup the snow and took a long swoop. YIKES.  I heard the metal on metal, but it was too late.  The roof and the tops of the passener side doors had been scraped beyond buffing repair.

So, for $500 I found someone to repaint it (for the same cost of a better place with a deductible). My advice - don't take the short way and wheel and deal a paint job - it's not worth it.  The poor Kia had to go back in when the cover paint started bubbling.  It should've been back again for the same flawed job, but instead I just used the touch-up paint to cover any missing spot - it  is only a Kia for goodness sakes.  And I guess the bigger tip of advice would be to not shovel your car!

This winter has remided me of this day back in November of 2004 often.  I LOVE to shovel and have had many opportunities this winter.  Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.  And buy a real snow scraper, with a brush on the end and a long handle when you're short, for your car.  Then everything will be just fine.

Now if I could only get the birds to stop crapping on the Kia...  (I'd attach my Kia bird crapping blog, but I'm not as blog savvy as Von :)

Good night
