Today was a great day in the Land of Rob. I rolled up to the farm in the late morning after stopping at the Saukville Feed store. I purchased their brand of Equi-shine and hope I don't regret it... It was more than $20 less. They promised the same ingredients - I'll check when I get home.
I pulled up to see Brahman and Robby sharing the same pile of hay. That's nice. I went in to grab a lead rope in the time it took to walk to the paddock Brahma had hidden behind the group of gelding and Robby came trotting to the gate without his halter! I love my little Robmeister.
The old paint horse Tonka had removed Robby's halter in a matter of seconds. Geesh.
I brought Rob in (with only a lead rope) and cross tied him in his stall. He was the only horse in the barn and did pretty well with this. He was a little nervous so I made sure to rub him a lot and gave him some Valor oil. Blanket off, surcingle and bit on and we made our way to the small indoor. YIKES - pigeons everywhere. This is going to be interesting.
Rob was a CHAMP! Even with pigeons swooping and crooning. The only thing that scared him was Louise (the barn manager) sweeping. Silly horse - he hears that all the time. I did some short line walk, whoa, trot, walk, whoa and then pushed his hind end and front end in each direction. He's not great with moving his front end to the left, but the other three tasks went well.
Then I grabbed the long rope and he walked, trotted and stopped in both directions - with pigeons flying around and everything. There were a couple bolt/hops, but nothing major. He was listening very well today. I think he likes working which is very different than his brother Cobrizo in MN...
I let him loose to do the cantering. I don't want him to turn too tightly yet at the canter. This is when he puts on a show - he's such a powerful little bugger. He is beautiful when his motor is running. But he never has a problem when the word whoa is uttered and this is good.
I went to grab the lead and stood on the tall mounting block inside the area. His inquisitiveness caused him to come over and visit me on the tall mounting block. He wasn't sure if her really like me being taller than he is, but he still let me lean over and hug around his neck and then rub my hands all around his back. I jumped off the mounting block - didn't phase him, and latched the lead.
It was a good day for little Rob working. He's still being naughty with his front left for picking hooves, but we're working on it.
Not enough time to work both guys today - I'll ride Brahma tomorrow. Happy Horsing!
